Olszewski Retains Title Against Fuentes

The first women's title fight in Laredo Texas did not disappoint.   As soon as  Christina "Mandy" Fuentes’ name was announced the arena burst out with cheers of support for their hometown girl.  The champion Eileen Olszewski knew she had her work cut out for her on this night.Round One was explosive, Mandy came charging out and pounced on Eileen.  Mandy was able to capitalize and connect putting Eileen on her heels.  But the tide turned when Eileen connected with a left hook, with Mandy ending on the canvas, becoming a 10-8 round.

You could see that Eileen was still trying to get comfortable in round two.  Overall both fighters settled down some, but Mandy was still aggressive with wide punches while Eileen appeared patient setting up a plan. Mandy's power and aggressiveness gave her the round.

The next couple of rounds were back and forth in scoring.   Mandy continued her power punching style, seemingly concentrating on breaking down her opponent with body shots, hurting Eileen at the end of the fourth.Rounds 5 to 7, "The Hawaiian Mongoose" started finding her stride by using more footwork and boxing.  Eileen would sometimes revert back to toe-to-toe action that wasn't as favorable for her.  Progressively Eileen was able to catch Mandy with short clean rights and show she and the better technique and angles.

The 8th round was a slugfest in the middle of the ring bringing the crowd to an uproar.   Mandy's advantage showed here on the scorecards with all judges giving her the nod.The final rounds had back and forth action.  Mandy tried to stay close and use her uppercuts.  The last round didn't disappoint with the final moments finishing with a big defensive volley of 1-2 punches from Mandy while Eileen pressured her on the ropes.

Eileen Olszewski retains her IFBA Flyweight title with a unanimous decision. Judge Joel Elizondo scored the fight 95-94; Judge Levi Martinez, 96-93; Judge Ruben Carrion, 95-94. Referee for the bout was Laurence Cole. Kim Messer supervised the championship for the International Female Boxers Association.
